Multisided Cobra Story -
The artists, the places and the poetry

This summer, the Cobra Museum highlights the meaning of Cobra (1948-1951), then and now. Why did this art movement come about? What motivated the artists to form a group? What did people think of Cobra? Which European cities were crucial, and what did the experimental poetry of the 1950s have to do with it? Three different exhibitions illuminate the many facets of the Cobra story.

Cobra Cities

02.06 - 07.10 2012

Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, New York: Cobra is inextricably associated with major city centres. This is where the artists lived, met one another in cafés and worked in spaces they shared. They were part of the artistic avant-garde that brought colour to these cities in the 1940s and 1950s. Cobra Cities presents works from the collection, revealing the art scene of which the Cobra artists were a part.

Cobra - Changing Times

10.05 - 09.09 2012

This theme presentation reveals the tumultuous history of the birth of Cobra, against a background of reconstruction, as the Netherlands was rebuilding itself after World War II. With their expressive and richly imaginative work, these rebellious artists were kicking at the shins of the established order. Art critics sneered, and even the artists themselves had mixed feelings. Vilified in its day, Cobra is now Art with a capital 'A'. Today, the Cobra ideals are as alive and poignant as ever, with contemporary artists finding inspiration in the Cobra legacy.

Chad Burt, Jeroen Jongeleen and Esmé Valk show new work or work especially made for the exhibition.

Recent exhibition Klee and Cobra. A Child's Play (28.01 - 22.04 2012) was blockbuster!

Open de kooien van de kunst. Gedicht-tekeningen van Lucebert

Open the Cages of Art.
Poem Drawings by Lucebert

08.05 - 09.09 2012

Cobra was not only a movement of visual artists. Experimental poets were also important. Some of the artists were both painters and poets. In the solo exhibition, Open the Cages of Art, Lucebert (1924-1994), the ultimate double talent, plays the leading role. Lucebert is one of the Netherlands' most influential poets and painters, a man who succeeded like no other in uniting word and image.
